The game was tied 10-10 at the end of the frame. Led by Knoerlein’s five points, the Phoenix built several first-quarter leads, but the sharpshooting Golden Horde fought back with three pointers from Francis and William Grabowski, getting their crowd in the game. The game ended West Rutland’s season, while the Phoenix advanced to play Twinfield. The Phoenix defeated the eighth-seeded West Rutland Golden Horde in a play-down game on Tuesday, Feb. Kelley led the team with 55 steals, and Benjamin led with 28 blocks. His 161 rebounds led Benjamin’s 158 by three, and his 54 assists led Kelley’s 49. Knoerlein finished the season with 325 points, edging out Kelley for the team-scoring lead by one point. Moore’s 11 points led the Trojans, and Wilson, Spencer, and Kris Utton each had eight. Sharon slowed down Twinfield’s attack for the remainder of the game, but struggled to find the net themselves. Two baskets from Harvey Kelley and one from Billy Connelli were all Sharon could manage in response, and Twinfield held a 26-10 halftime lead. The Trojans found their groove after the first break, scoring 18 second quarter points, including six from Eli Wilson’s two three-pointers and six from Connor Spencer. The Trojans broke through the Phoenix defense for four baskets in the first quarter, and led 8-4 at the end of the frame. Sharon scored first, on a layup by Cordell Benjamin, and successfully slowed the game’s pace throughout the first quarter. The Phoenix started the game running the four corners offense and a unique defense in an attempt to slow down the game against Twinfield’s powerhouse offense. The loss ended the Phoenix’s season, and sent the Trojans to the Barre Auditorium for the third year in a row. The ninth-seeded Sharon Academy varsity boys’ basketball team lost their Vermont Division IV quarterfinal game against the top-seeded Twinfield Trojans by a score of 40- 23.
